Definition - What does Credentialing mean?

Credentialing is the process of obtaining and reviewing the professional qualifications and career background of licensed professionals, organizations, or members of organizations, in order to confirm the legitimacy of the information. It is most often used in the medical and health care professions where credentialing verifies the education, residency, training, licenses, and specialties of practitioners.

SureHire explains Credentialing

Credentialing is preformed when a new medical practitioner is hired as well as at scheduled intervals after commencement (a process called recredentialing) of employment/practice. It is performed in order to comply with the regulations set out by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). If credentialing is delegated to a third-party, it must be carried out by n NCQA-certified Credentials Verification Organization (CVO).

According to the NCQA, all health care organizations are required to have an established process for the credentialing and recredentialing practitioners.
