Definition - What does Hijacking mean?
Hijacking is a felony crime where a person uses force, or the threat of force, to seize control of an occupied transport vessel such as an airplane or motor vehicle for the purposes of taking possession of it or the valuable goods contained by the vessel. Hijacking is often referred to as carjacking if the act involves the commandeering of a personal motor vehicle.

Vehicular hijacking typically occurs where a motor vehicle is stationary for a time such as at intersections, parking areas, or rest stops. In 1992 it was classified as a felony crime that is punishable by between 4 and 15 years in prison without the chance of probation. Vehicular hijacking has become more prevalent of late due to the advancement in vehicular security technology which provides greater protection against the theft of unoccupied vehicles.
The use of a firearm or other deadly weapon by the perpetrator during a hijacking is referred to as Aggravated Vehicular Hijacking or Aggravated Carjacking.
