Ligaments are made of flexible collagen fibers that allow slight stretc. Unlike tendons which attach bones to muscle, ligaments form the connection between bones. Ligaments help maintain the body's structural integrity during movement. Ligaments may also connect organs or other tissue to a bone.
Repetitive motion, particularly twisting motions, or a traumatic injury can case damage to a ligament. Torn ligament injuries most often occur in the knee or ankle. Ligaments can also stiffen with lack of use after an injury. A ligament injury can cause pain and swelling, joint instability, and limit the sufferer's range of motion.
