Definition - What does Anaerobic mean?
Anaerobic means without oxygen. It is typically used to describe activity in the body that does not require oxygen or exercise of a high intensity over a short time period. Anaerobic is the antithesis of aerobic where aerobic exercise is slower and longer. The body needs both aerobic and anaerobic activity in order to supply energy efficiently.
SureHire explains Anaerobic
Anaerobic activity releases nineteen times less energy for the equivalent amount of glucose than aerobic activity. During anaerobic exercise, glucose is not broken down fully, resulting in less energy being released. This causes a build-up of lactic acid in the muscles, which is removed through aerobic activity that oxidizes the lactic acid to carbon dioxide. The resulting oxygen deficit leads to heavy respiration to recover the lost oxygen post-exercise. The types of exercise that are anaerobic include sprinting, heavy weight-lifting, isometric and interval training.
